 Luke Baldwin entered the 2024 season looking to become the Rookie of the Year on the SMART Modified Tour. In the end, Baldwin did even better. Wheeling the Pace-O-Matic No. 7VA for Sadler-Stanley Racing, Baldwin captured the SMART Modified Tour title Saturday in the season-finale at North Wilkesboro Speedway.
Baldwin finished third in the 99-lap main event, enough to best the other four contenders racing him for the title. The 18-year-old North Carolina native posted two wins and countless top-fives during an impressive rookie season that ended with the championship trophy. “I can’t put it into words,” Baldwin said. “I just can’t thank everyone enough. It’s been a year filled with ups and downs. We could have had five or six wins as a team if it wasn’t for me being so inexperienced. It still doesn’t feel real. Baldwin, 18, is competing in his first season of Open-Wheel Modified Racing, and has delivered for SS Racing in 2024. Baldwin has two victories on the SMART Modified Tour, and finished second in the regular season point standings, earning an opportunity to race for the championship at North Wilkesboro Speedway in the season-finale this Saturday, October 19. “Luke has exceeded our expectations in every way this season,” team co-owner Hermie Sadler said. “He is a very talented racer, takes care of his equipment, and carries himself in a way that is beyond his years. I would expect to see him do more racing in 2025 outside of the Modifieds. Sadler-Stanley (SS) Racing is ready for a mega weekend of action to wrap the SMART Modified Tour season. Saturday at North Wilkesboro Speedway, team driver Luke Baldwin is part of the Championship 5, chasing the title for 2024. The highest finishing of the five drivers in the race will earn the crown. Baldwin will be back in action in his No. 7VA Pace-O-Matic entry, trying to seal up the title in his Rookie season on the SMART Modified Tour. While Baldwin competes for the title, team drivers Bobby Labonte and Jonathan Cash will also be in action in the finale of the SMART campaign for 2024. On Sunday, Labonte will also drive a car in the Brushy Mountain Powersports 150 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event for SS Racing, as the NASCAR Hall of Fame driver returns to NASCAR’s oldest touring series. “I feel really good going into North Wilkesboro,” Baldwin said. “We have a lot of momentum as a team and we had great speed at the test. It will be tough running against these guys with so much experience, but at the end of the day, if we are firing on all cylinders, I feel like we are the best team on the SMART Modified Tour in our PSR Chassis.” Saturday’s SMART Modified Tour race is set to begin at 7:15 p.m. Before the race, teams will practice at 1 p.m. and qualify at 3:15 p.m. On Sunday, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour practices from 10:30-11:30 a.m., followed by qualifying at 1 p.m. and the green flag for the Brushy Mountain Powersports 150 at 2 p.m. All of the racing for the weekend, which also includes the CARS Tour championship events, will be live on FloRacing.TV. The team will honor Hendrick by carrying the “Flying 11” number on the entry driven by Jonathan Cash. The Pace-O-Matic machine will compete at South Boston Speedway on Saturday, October 12. Hendrick, a former South Boston Speedway track champion, passed away on August 3. He won titles at South Boston, Southside Speedway and Orange County Speedway all in the same season in 1983. Hendrick finished second in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series in 1990 and 1991, driving for car owner Jim Irby, among many other accolades. “When I first started racing Late Model Stock Cars in 1990, Roy Hendrick was one of the few veterans that was always helpful and supportive to a rookie like I was at that time,” Hermie Sadler said. “He was also a great race car driver - fair and fun to compete against on the track. My father also used to sponsor his father, Ray Hendrick, the Hall of Famer, when he drove the Flying 11 for Jack Tant and Clayton Mitchell. We wanted to continue to honor his family from Virginia at one of Virginia’s most famous race tracks, South Boston Speedway.” Cash, who has a best finish of second on the SMART Modified Tour so far this season, is excited to wheel the special scheme. “I’m very honored to have the Hendrick throwback scheme on our Pace-O-Matic ride,” Cash said. “I grew up watching Roy Hendrick drive at South Boston.
