 For the third time in his SMART Modified Tour career, Luke Baldwin was in Victory Lane on Saturday evening at Anderson Motor Speedway. Baldwin won the Pace-O-Matic pole in qualifying with a track record time around the South Carolina oval. He followed it up by remaining near the front of the field for the entire 99-lap distance, saving his equipment until it mattered most.
Baldwin took the lead for the final time after a pit stop for a fresh tire and never looked back. The victory was his first of the season in the second race of the year for the defending series champion. Earlier in the week, Baldwin announced a part-time effort on the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series this season, with three events for Thorsport Racing. “It was a badass race car all day,” Baldwin, who was fastest in practice and qualifying and won the race, said. “These PSR Products Modifieds are unreal. It’s a pleasure to drive for Hermie Sadler and Bill Stanley and this entire SS Racing team. It’s really cool to bounce back from Florence and be back in Victory Lane.” Team driver Jonathan Cash also captured his second straight top-10 finish to open the year, finishing in 10th.  The second race of the SMART Modified Tour season is set for this Saturday, March 8 at Anderson Motor Speedway in South Carolina. The Pace-O-Matic, Sadler-Stanley Racing drivers, Luke Baldwin and Jonathan Cash, will both be on the track ready for action.
Both are coming off top-10 finishes in the opener at Florence last weekend, with Baldwin 9th and Cash 10th. They are both looking to build on that run. Baldwin was running second until late contact sent him to the tail of the field. The two drivers topped the only practice session of the day, showing the speed in their mounts. In his debut year in a Tour-Type Modified, the Mooresville, North Carolina, native captured two wins on the SMART Modified Tour, including a massive $20,000 to win in the King of the Modifieds event at South Boston Speedway, and a triumph at Dominion Raceway. Baldwin, 18, is competing in his first season of Open-Wheel Modified Racing, and has delivered for SS Racing in 2024. On Sunday, Labonte will also drive a car in the Brushy Mountain Powersports 150 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event for SS Racing, as the NASCAR Hall of Fame driver returns to NASCAR’s oldest touring series. “I feel really good going into North Wilkesboro,” Baldwin said. “We have a lot of momentum as a team and we had great speed at the test. It will be tough running against these guys with so much experience, but at the end of the day, if we are firing on all cylinders, I feel like we are the best team on the SMART Modified Tour in our PSR Chassis.” Saturday’s SMART Modified Tour race is set to begin at 7:15 p.m. Before the race, teams will practice at 1 p.m. and qualify at 3:15 p.m. On Sunday, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour practices from 10:30-11:30 a.m., followed by qualifying at 1 p.m. and the green flag for the Brushy Mountain Powersports 150 at 2 p.m. All of the racing for the weekend, which also includes the CARS Tour championship events, will be live on FloRacing.TV. The team will honor Hendrick by carrying the “Flying 11” number on the entry driven by Jonathan Cash. The Pace-O-Matic machine will compete at South Boston Speedway on Saturday, October 12. Hendrick, a former South Boston Speedway track champion, passed away on August 3. He won titles at South Boston, Southside Speedway and Orange County Speedway all in the same season in 1983. Hendrick finished second in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series in 1990 and 1991, driving for car owner Jim Irby, among many other accolades. “When I first started racing Late Model Stock Cars in 1990, Roy Hendrick was one of the few veterans that was always helpful and supportive to a rookie like I was at that time,” Hermie Sadler said. “He was also a great race car driver - fair and fun to compete against on the track. My father also used to sponsor his father, Ray Hendrick, the Hall of Famer, when he drove the Flying 11 for Jack Tant and Clayton Mitchell. We wanted to continue to honor his family from Virginia at one of Virginia’s most famous race tracks, South Boston Speedway.” Cash, who has a best finish of second on the SMART Modified Tour so far this season, is excited to wheel the special scheme. “I’m very honored to have the Hendrick throwback scheme on our Pace-O-Matic ride,” Cash said. “I grew up watching Roy Hendrick drive at South Boston. Sadler-Stanley Racing driver Luke Baldwin was on top for the second time in his Tour-Type Modified career on Saturday night at Dominion Raceway. After qualifying on the pole, Baldwin redrew second for the Flying VA Classic. With a dominant performance, Baldwin was at the front of the field for much of the 99-lap distance in Virginia. He drove the Pace-O-Matic, PSR Chassis No. 7VA to Victory Lane for the second time this season for Sadler-Stanley Racing.
“This PSR Products, Pace-O-Matic Modified was on a rail tonight,” Baldwin said. “My guys give me a winning race car every race and I’m glad I was able to put it together for them, the Hendrick family and Glenn Dixon. I had to run side-by-side with a lot of big names in this one. It’s really special to win. My guys deserve it.” While Baldwin won, two other Sadler-Stanley Racing drivers also competed in the race. After 99 laps, full-time driver Jonathan Cash finished seventh in the No. 16VA. Behind him, NASCAR Hall of Fame driver and former NASCAR Cup Series champion Bobby Labonte finished 11th. The Sadler-Stanley Racing team has a quick turnaround ahead. The next event on the SMART Modified Tour schedule is set for Wednesday, September 18 at Lonesome Pine Motorsports Park.
